Marvel is getting ready for major changes as Phase: Two comes to an end next summer with The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and new, unsubstantiated rumors Robert Downey Jr. may leave the role of Tony Stark and Iron Man, though he’s locked up until Avengers 3.
Of course nobody manages a crisis in Hollywood better than Marvel creative chiefs Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon. Indeed their big play for Phase: Three is Doctor Strange, who they see as the long term replacement for Downey Jr.’s franchise linchpin.
Now Deadline has reported that the studio has lined up Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy, both hugely respected and popular actors, as the top choices for the role of Doctor Strange. There was also a recent report suggesting Jared Leto is on Marvel’s hit list, although the Oscar winner has previously resisted big franchise movies.
The film already has a director, Scott Derrickson, whose previous credits such as Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, indicate that the project will be much more supernatural in tone, than previous franchise installments.
In fact, that is something which Feige suggested recently.
He said: "There’s a whole other side to the Marvel universe, which is the supernatural side.
“We haven’t done anything that mind-trippy yet and for me,?Doctor Strange?is our doorway into that.”
Following the fairly embarrassing pre-production of Ant-Man, which resulted in longtime director Edgar Wright leaving the project, and new helmer Peyton Reed (Yes Man) taking over with a script rewrite by Adam McKay (Anchorman), Marvel will want Strange to go as smoothly as possible.
So far Phase: Three will include Ant-Man (out July 17, 2015),?Doctor Strange, Avengers 3, and Captain America 3 (likely May 2016). Also a third installment of Thor looks like a distinct possibility. Iron Man 4 may happen with Robert Downey, Jr., too, but again, the rumors that pop up every now and then have him leaving and Marvel rebooting the franchise. We’ll have to wait and see, though Marvel and Disney may back a Binks Truck into his driveway and dump enough cash to keep RDJ onboard for years.
