Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! And they’re going back to the theaters!
This weekend marks it’s 30th anniversary of the original Ghostbusters, and it’s been fully restored and remastered. It’ll open up on more than 700 theaters across the land in August as part of its anniversary celebration.
Besides the re-release, we’ll have special events such as a traveling art show, where over 70 artists will display original paintings, prints, and sculptures as well as new collectible merchandise including a LEGO version of Ecto-1, and a Ghostbusters inspired collectables line of Japan’s Domo monster.
We’ll also get brand new home-entertainment releases for Ghostbusters’ 30th anniversary and Ghostbusters II 25th anniversary both remastered in 4K and released on Blu-ray on September 19. Obviously they’ll be packed with all new special features including interviews with director Ivan Reitman and writer/star Dan Aykroyd. You can check out the Ghostbusters website for more.
If you’ve been following all the Ant-Man news, you’ve heard that Ruben Fleischer has been offered the directors chair for both Ant-Man and Ghostbusters 3. Fleischer has apparently already passed on Ant-Man, and this is a great way for Sony to gauge whether audiences are still clamouring for more Ghostbusters.
The re-release will also introduce a brand new generation to the franchise. If we get a huge influx of the 18-34 demographic you can bet Sony will fast track the third film.
Ghostbusters will be re-released in theaters August 29, 2014.
