Warner Bros. has announced that science fiction blockbuster Jupiter Ascending has been pushed back to February 2015, despite being scheduled for release in six weeks in July 18, 2014.
Directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski and starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum, the film has been plagued by negative press following the debut of its trailer.
Warner’s confirmed that the project, co-financed by Village Roadshow and costing a sizeable $150 million, needed extra work on its visuall effects and has been delayed as a result.
While a major studio picture being delayed used to almost guarantee poor box office, it is now not always the case. Indeed the most recent example is World War Z, which grossed $540 million, despite the release being pushed back in order to rewrite and reshoot the final third. Now a sequel is being developed.
Although despite this, the signs do not look good for Jupiter Ascending. Firstly, the start of the year is known as the dumping ground for bad big movies, as the box office is dominated by smaller award season contenders.
Also the Wachowskis’ last film Cloud Atlas was a commercial flop, grossing $130 million from a $102 million (not counting the huge marketing costs) despite some critics praising its style and ambition. In fact, since their groundbreaking Matrix trilogy, which raked in over $1.6 billion worldwide, the sibling duo’s only other directorial effort, Speed Racer, performed even worse, grossing just under $94 million from a huge $120 million budget. Maybe the oft-rumored new?Matrix trilogy?should indeed move forward.
Whether the delay means the studio has lost faith in the film, we will have to wait and see. Stay tuned for more Jupiter Ascending developments.
