If you strike one down, another will take its place. At Marvel Studios, that seems to happen extremely quick.
With Rawson Marshall Thurber, Adam McKay, and Ruben Fleischer all officially pulling out of Ant-Man, it looked like Marvel was going back to the drawing board. Every day Marvel doesn’t have a director lined up means it’ll be harder for them to hit the July 2015 release date, and with all three of the original replacement directors out of the running, there was a question as to where Marvel would look next.
*cough* *cough* Re-hire Edgar Wright and let him make his own movie *cough* *cough*.
Deadline is reporting two more names that we haven’t heard before for could be up to take the helm. Nicholas Stoller and Michael Dowse are names being bounced around to direct the film and the choices are interesting. Stoller is coming off of Neighbors (with Seth Rogen and Zac Efron), which was a smash hit at the box office. Dowse would be the underdog of the two, as he directed some awesome Canadian films such as FUBAR and Goon. Clearly Marvel wants comedy directors for?Ant-Man.
Full disclosure: I’m Canadian so it would be nice to see a local boy make it big.
Stoller is slated to direct an untitled film with Seth Rogen and Kevin Hart, on top of producing multiple animated films, so if he turns down the project, Dowse is pretty much guaranteed to pick it up. How accurate are these reports and what are the chances that either one of them will get Ant-Man? Your guess is as good as mine, but the cast is still lined up, just in a holding pattern. There is most definitely a lot of money at stake if the movie falls apart, and if they have to move the release date back, like they did with Thor 2 (from spring to fall 2013), then so be it.
