Following his transition from quirky art house filmmaker, Doug Liman has now firmly established himself as an action director of substance.
So the news that The Bourne Identity helmer and actor Tom Hardy are set to adapt video game Splinter Cell to the big screen is intriguing to say the least.
Although, despite gnarled protagonist Sam Fisher being a special forces veteran in the game, Liman admitted that Hardy’s version of the character will be less mature.
He said (via IGN): “Everything about?Splinter Cell?will be younger. It's a chance to come up with a new franchise that is fresher and newer and younger, and Tom Hardy is such an incredible actor.
“I'm working on the script with Tom. I think we have a great take on how to make an awesome film out of it.”
The Swingers director also discussed the importance of keeping the balance between appeasing the fans of the video game and not being a slave to the source material. Indeed, what is compelling in a video game, can rarely hold the attention of a cinema audience.
He said: "Some of the tropes of the game will for sure be in the film, but also the fun of that is when you lose them. To strip that stuff away and really make the character have to operate without it.”
Liman latest film, Edge of Tomorrow, is a hugely ambitious science fiction blockbuster starring Tom Cruise. While joining the Top Gun star on a publicity tour which consisted of three premieres – London, Paris and New York – in 24 hours, the Go helmer revealed that Cruise made him a better filmmaker.
He said (via Irish Independent): "He (Cruise) lives in a world where the word ‘no’ doesn’t exist. He inspires you to want to do more."
Edge of Tomorrow hit screens this weekend. Stay tuned for more Splinter Cell news.
