A Geek's Reaction To New Hercules Trailer

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

Hercules. Demigod offspring of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene who was considered to be the strongest man in the world and went on many adventures collectively known as the twelve labours. MGM and Paramount teamed up to bring you a new take on Hercules, cast Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the titular character and released a second trailer today.

Johnson is great for a role like Hercules, he has the size you’d expect from a man who could punch a hole in the moon, so casting-wise, I’m onboard. If you follow his Twitter account, you’ve seen pictures where he packed on serious muscle for the role.

The film is set after Hercules’ twelve labors, but the trailer shows quite a bit of them: the slaying of the nine-headed Lernaean Hydra, the capture (or possibly slaying) of the Erymanthian Boar, the capture (or possibly slaying)?of Cerberus all show up in the trailer. Check out the trailer below (via IGN) and I’ll get to my analysis:

I like my genre films quite a bit, having grown up on a steady diet of movies like Star Wars, Legend, and the original Clash of the Titans. I always look forward to seeing a trailer for a sci-fi or fantasy film especially one rooted in classic mythology — but the trailers for this film that have come out so far have not impressed me at all. While this trailer is much better than the first, it still leaves a lot to be desired.

Story-wise, it sounds great, as it seems to want to deal with the aftermath of becoming a legend. What do you do when you’ve finished your adventure and got the girl? What happens when that gets taken away and you have to survive? Sadly, none of these things are really on display in the trailer.

I really want to like this movie, but everything, besides Dwayne Johnson, seems to just get a “meh” response from me — despite my giggling everytime he says “I am Hercules!” Hell, even John Hurt being in this can’t get me excited. I hope the next trailer alleviates the blandness and gives us more to be excited about. Here’s the synopsis:

Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend. Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules' help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail... he must again become the hero he once was... he must embrace his own myth... he must be Hercules.

Hercules premieres July 25, 2014.
