Kathleen Kennedy, you really know how to pick them for Star Wars! First she brought Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan to write some screenplays (with Oscar winning screenwriter Michael Arndt onboard early on), and then pursued JJ Abrams to direct Episode VII. Whether you like the Star Trek reboots or not, you have to admit it had more in common with Star Wars than classic Trek.
Then came word that Gareth Edwards, fresh off the amazing Godzilla, was tapped to direct a Star Wars spinoff for December 16, 2016. I cannot begin to describe how much I loved Godzilla and think this is a fantastic choice — even though I have no clue what the movie is going to be about.
Now we have /Film reporting that another awesome director is onboard for a second spinoff film. Josh Trank, who is currently working on the Fantastic Four reboot for Fox, is lining up to direct the project but, again, we have no word on whom from the Star Wars universe it’ll feature. Could it be Yoda, a young Han Solo, or Boba Fett? We know they’ll be origin stories.
I know there are a few controversies surrounding the Fantastic Four production but personally, I have faith that Trank will give us something we’ll really enjoy. Here’s the press release from Disney and Lucasfilm:
In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank.
"We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX."
Trank states, "The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time."
Trank captured imaginations worldwide with his critically lauded directorial debut Chronicle, a fresh and engaging take on the superhero genre. Trank is currently at work on The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox.
/Film is reporting that the Trank spinoff will premiere 2018, after a 2017 release for Episode VIII, which is possible. However, the prequel and original trilogies had a three year gap between films, and no one is yet officially attached to direct Episode VIII. Could it be that Disney is going to commit to that production schedule and give us 2 side films in between each episode? I kind of hope so even though that means waiting longer between each episode. Also, Hasbro may have accidentally leaked the release schedule.
With Edwards and now Trank on board, it seems that Lucasfilm is after young blood to direct these spin-offs. Both directors are relatively new who directed their own unique low budget sci-fi films — and that’s promising for a 37-year-old property that’s just been given a new lease on life.
Star Wars: Episode VII premieres December 18, 2015.
