Now that Hollywood has done, or are planning, a remake or reboot of every single movie from the 1980′s and 1990′s, brazen studio execs are plundering the blockbusters of the 1990s.
Next up is Cliffhanger (1993), a Sylvester Stallone vehicle which was a big commercial success, grossing over $255 million from a $65 million budget.
The story centered upon Stallone’s mountain rescue ranger who inadvertently becomes embroiled in a heist with a bunch of criminals lead by the excellent John Lithgow. Basically, Die Hard up a mountain. Remember those rip-off movies? Die Hard on a bus (Speed), hockey rink (Sudden Death), Air Force One (Executive Decision), and so on.
The rights to the film were actually snapped up in 2010 by Studio Canal, who have been perusing spec scripts ever since. Now newcomer Joe Gazzam has developed a story which the producers, including Neal Moritz (Fast & Furious), are happy with signalling the greenlight. To clarify, Stallone will not be appearing in the reboot.
Indeed, Cliffhanger was made in a time where, evidently, not every box office hit was developed into a franchise. Amazingly, the film was actually a turning point in Stallone’s quite extraordinary career after flops such as Over The Top, Lock Up, and Oscar, along with the critically panned Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot, Rocky V, Rambo III, and pretty much any movie the star made in the mid to late 1980s, and also most of the 1990′s and 2000′s.
Of course, 20 years later Stallone, after being written off more times in his career than any other A-lister I can think of, is still going strong with The Expendables?franchise, and part 3?hitting screens this August.
Indeed, the Cliffhanger remake could use someone with Stallone’s ingenuity and downright luck. The original was directed by Renny Harlin, before he helmed the infamous Cutthroat Island, one of the biggest box office bombs in history, and more or less saw Harlin (Die Hard 2) and his up-and-coming directing career go sideways.
There is still no word as to who direct the reboot. Stay tuned for more Cliffhanger remake news, including casting and production developments.
