Whether Johnny Depp has suddenly realised that his recent bad run at the box office is directly linked to him no longer making good movies, only the hugely wealthy actor knows.
However, the Edward Scissorhands actor’s luck may be about the change, with Variety reporting that he is being lined up to star in The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero.
The story, which has been adapted from a book written by William Kalush and Larry Sloma, centres on the magician's attempts to uncover fraudulent spiritualists, and also details his work as a spy.
Depp’s career certainly needs a little bit of magic after the star took the controversial decision to only make movies which have bad scripts and large pay cheques.
Indeed Depp’s last two movies, The Lone Ranger and Transcendence, were two of the biggest box office flops of the last 12 months.
There has also been speculation that the star’s poor run has resulted in Pirates of the Caribbean 5 being delayed, although that has as much to do with producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s poor relationship with Disney, as it does anything else.
Depp’s next project, gangster movie Black Mass, also sounds promising. However, the star reportedly halted production because of his excessive wage demands.
There is no doubt that the world is crying out for a really great Houdini movie; whether you are a fan of magic or not, the legendary entertainer was a fascinating individual. Variety has also revealed that Dean Prisot (Red 2) is attached to direct the project.
