Sajal Sarkar

Sajal Sarkar was born in Kolkata in 1963, eastern region of India . He initially enrolled in a local art school and later at Govt. College of Art and Craft, Kolkata and completed BFA in painting in 1989.Then he work as a freelance illustrator for one year in the Kids weekly section in a leading Bengali newspaper. He taught art to the differently abled kids at Spastics Society of Eastern India, Kolkata in 1990. He was also a regular contributor with illustrations in little magazines published for the unknown aspirant young writers. In 1993 Sajal decided to move to Baroda, in the western region of India, to learn and study printmaking at M S University of Baroda and completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Printmaking in 1995. In 1996 Sajal was awarded a grant from Elizabeth Greenshields foundation, Canada .Within a few years of art practice he got some more recognition through research fellowship, grants and some international exposures such as solo show in AICON gallery at Palo alto US in 2007, a second grant from Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, Canada in 2005 and a number of shows in India and internationally, including Print Triennial of Chamelieres, France. He attended a lot of art workshops and residencies both for painting and printmaking in India and abroad. One of Sajal’s etching print has find a place in the collection of Library congress in their prints and photography section. In the year 2012 a sculptural project was approved by the cultural ministry of India and he was awarded the Senior Research Fellowship. Sajal was associated with various art schools in India and specially with the Painting and Printmaking dept. for more than 20 years at Faculty of Fine Arts, M S University of Baroda ,India as an external jury member and played a major role for co-curricular programs such as art workshops and artist portfolio. Presently working as an Art Instructor at Visual Art Center of New Jersey,Summit.
