I was raised in Southeastern Michigan, where I learned the majority of my creative and constructive skills. My career direction and skill set were refined at Spring Arbor University in Jackson County, Michigan. I now teach art at Christa McAuliffe Middle School in Bay City, MI, and spend time with my wife and kids or look for new skills to master in my free time. I consider myself as much a craftsman as an artist and see a strong connection between fine art and functional craft, though I still believe in a fundamental distinction between the two. I am drawn to new skills in both realms each year, from pottery, to drawing, primitive bowyery, and most recently cabinet-making (our kitchen needed work). For me the second most satisfying work is that which improves the environment in which we live both aesthetically and functionally. Even more satisfying, however, is watching my students be successful. Giving them the skills they need to move forward in the arts is the very reason I get out of bed each morning.
