EA Partners with Microsoft To Launch Subscription Game Service

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

Electronic Arts (EA) has just announced a brand new cloud-based gaming subscription service called EA Access, which will offer users access to their best games for $5 a month, or $30 a year and marks a shift to cloud-based alternatives for users to get in the game.

Today we're revealing a new way for gamers to play more EA games.?This is something we've never done before and we're excited to share it with you.

0.0_I-3_KeyArtWith access what EA calls “The Vault,” users will be able to play such games as FIFA 14Madden NFL 25Peggle 2, and Battlefield 4. EA hopes users will see EA Access as a great value since they’ll only be paying $5 a month to play games stored in the cloud. And to make it even more attractive, the gaming company is also offering 10% all digital content purchased for the XBox One through the XBox Games Store.

“From full digital-download titles like the upcoming Dragon Age Inquisition or NHL?15,” the EA blog post stated, “to additional membership services such as Battlefield 4 Premium or even FIFA Ultimate Team points, it's all 10% off for members.” Users will also gain access to all new EA games a week before the release date.

EA Access is currently in Beta with a limited number of players and is XBox-centric (sorry PlayStation 4 fans), but they may have hinted that should EA Access be popular, that it could expand beyond Microsoft’s exclusivity.

“At EA, we are always looking for new ways to make it easier for gamers to play more EA games across all platforms, and we are excited about what EA Access will offer to players on Xbox One.” But I wouldn’t hold my breath for it to happen any time soon, as Microsoft is pretty much paying the freight on this in order to gain market share in the XBox games store. But I hope that XBox 360 users will at least be able to participate as well.

Right now, EA Access is available only through XBox Live, but EA plans to also offer the program via GameStop, EB Games in Canada, and Amazon once it gets out of Beta. And for $30 a year, how can you not wanna do that? Beats the $60-70 price tag per game!
