Nikon wanted to showcase the video capability of their new D810 DSLR, and so they went north into eastern Canada to chronicle fishermen living their life on the Sea. The result is a visually stunning and picturesque presentation that would make event the head of IMAX drool with envy that he didn’t get there and tell the story first.
Earlier this year, NPS Canada contracted us to shoot a short film utilizing a new camera they had coming out. What we wanted to do with the project was find a way to showcase the capabilities of the camera while also telling a story. For this project, we chose to produce a full campaign that included a short documentary, behind the scenes film as well as a photo series. – Cinescapes.ca
The film is called “Every Moment Counts,” and it’s told from the view point of Manny Vaughan, a fisherman faced with the prospect of retirement and looking back at his life on the open sea. It’s a charming retrospective that not only tells a wonderful story of a man who’s seen everything on the waves, but also treats the surrounding of the Canadian harbors like characters in and of themselves. And it’s done with great effect through the Nikon D810.
“For this project, our goal is to showcase what the D810 is capable of producing in both still and video formats,” writes Preston Kanak from Cinescape.CA. “A photo series, a teaser video, seven?minute documentary and [behind-the-scenes] video will be produced that showcase the capabilities of this camera, while focusing on the technical specifications that make this camera unique. These videos will be watched by not only the current customer base but also the general public because of the format of storytelling.”
The shooters not only shot handheld, but also used a quadcopter and captured some nice aerial scenes as well. Once they secured their footage, they had to travel back home and decided to edit in the car while driving back.
“With the quick turnaround we had for this project, it was key that we started the edit while on the road,” Kanak adds. “With the long distances between locations, we decided to put the edits together while driving. This was a great way to review footage we just shot and start to see the film take shape. By doing this, we were able to quickly see what we still had left to film and were able to adapt the project as we worked on it.”
Then they took on social media, deciding to role out the short film in increments online and pushing it via Twitter and Facebook. “…we decided to split the releases up,” Kanak said. “The teaser video was set to be released on July 9th, the main film on July 14th, the behind the scenes on July 19th and the photos to be released throughout this period.”
This gave them momentum from week-to-week, with behind-the-scenes images carrying the interest over from one week to the next. The result is a lovely tale of a man looking back over his life and doing so with amazing, yet humble images.
