When Apple redesigned Final Cut Pro X from the ground up, it turned off many pros, that Adobe was the prime beneficiary of those looking to switch. Sure, some have made their way back to Apple after a few upgrades to bring back some features, but there’s no denying that Adobe was the beneficiary. And it looks like they may be again as Apple has killed Aperture, their professional-grade photo management suite. And Lightroom CC is just a few clicks away.
“With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library, enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture. When Photos for OS X ships next year, users will be able to migrate their existing Aperture libraries to Photos for OS.” – Apple Statement
Pros weren’t the only ones alienated, as Apple also killed off iPhoto, their consumer-grade software. Now sure, development of both is being shuttered because of their new Photos app. But if it’s just a one -size fits all solution, it’s certain that many advanced and professional users are going to be left wanting. And Adobe is ready to pick them up.
“Put simply we’re doubling down on our investments in Lightroom and the new Creative Cloud Photography plan and you can expect to see a rich roadmap of rapid innovation for desktop, web and device workflows in the coming weeks, months and years,” said Winston Hendrickson of Adobe Imaging. “We also continue to invest actively on the iOS and OSX platforms, and are committed to helping interested iPhoto and Aperture customers migrate to our rich solution across desktop, device and web workflows.”
Adobe recently announced a new Creative Cloud Photography package which gives users Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CC for $9.99 per month. Now sure, Aperture was only $80 out the door, but the benefit of Creative Cloud is that they are constantly announcing updates, and so new features are always just over the horizon. And for $10 a month, seriously will Aperture users even balk?
Adobe isn’t the only company looking to court disaffected Aperture users. Corel is offering AfterShot Pro 2 for a special price of $59.99, plus they offer support in helping Aperture users migrate their files and data, to boot. “Launched last month, the new AfterShot Pro 2 offers competitive upgrade pricing ($59) to Aperture users,” said Corel in a statement. “AfterShot Pro already supports use of a more Aperture-like file system to manage your photos. In the coming weeks, we'll be looking for more ways we can make the transition easy for Aperture users and you can expect to see more from us with AfterShot on the Mac in the near future.”
So at the end of the day, did Apple really do itself any favors by expecting photographers to be pushed into the Photos arena? Sound off in the comments below!
