Her

This movie is perfect for someone interested in data engineering in the form of science fiction and how it can be framed in a relationship. This 2013 movie was directed by Spike Jonze and stars Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson. In the movie, Phoenix plays Theodore, a recently heartbroken and divorced man who downloads software that is supposedly meant to mimic a human friend. Samantha, the software played by Johansson, has such a lovely personality that Theodore and she develop an intensely deep relationship. This movie truly showcases just how intricate the field of data science is, while also playing out a very interesting love story. If you are in the mood for some romance and deep thought, this is the movie for you.

The Imitation Game

Maybe you are in the mood for a historical and biographical film about a giant in the computer world's development. This movie, directed by Morten Tyldum, stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the brilliant computer scientist and mathematician Alan Turing. Turing is famous for developing spying systems based on mathematics to help the Allied powers win World War II. The story of Turing is interesting for its wartime plotline, Turing's personal life, and the great depiction of Turing's code-cracking abilities. This film outlines, specifically, Turing's ability to decipher the infamous Nazi code known as Enigma, which had flabbergasted plenty of brilliant men before him. If you love historical dramas, then definitely give this one a watch.

Moneyball

At the intersection of sports and data lies this interesting flick. This movie, which won quite a few awards when it premiered, stars Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill as a baseball coaching duo who utilize the field of data science to build a winning baseball team. In this film directed by Bennett Miller, Pitt stars as Oakland A's general manager, Billy Beane. Beane enlists the help of Peter Brand, who is played by Jonah Hill, to use statistics to build a winning team from the ground up by using players whose statistics complement one another on the field. This movie is based on a true story and details the importance of statistics in the frame of baseball. If your friends love sports as much as you love computers, then this movie is perfect for all to enjoy.

ex Machina

If you are more interested in where computer science meets human psychology meets philosophy, then sit down for this darkly interesting sci-fi flick directed by Alex Garland. This movie will truly make you question everything and take you for an interesting ride while doing so. Garland's flick stars Alicia Vikander as a manmade female robot who strikes the fancy of programmer Caleb Smith who is played by Domhnall Gleeson. Smith visits super billionaire scientist Nathan Bateman, played by Oscar Isaac, in order to perform the Turing test (yes, named after Alan Turing), on Vikander's character, Ava. Over the course of Smith's stay, he unlocks some dark secrets of Bateman's and discovers some truly insane things.

Hopefully one or all of these movies strike you as interesting. Some might even become your new favorites! After all, nothing is quite as much fun as finding a film that showcases your interests.
