8 Tips for Decorating Your Bedroom

Whether you have a small bedroom just for yourself, or a larger room for multiple members of your family, your bedrooms are important. Having a dull, undecorated room can look sterile, so take some time to make your rooms look welcoming. Depending on the size and intended function of your bedroom, you have an almost limitless number of ways to decorate it. The number of possibilities may seem overwhelming, but with some guidance, you'll be well on your way to having a great place to sleep. Check out these eight tips to get you started on decorating your bedroom.

1. Choosing the Right Bed

As the bed is the most important piece of furniture in the bedroom, choosing the right one is important. First, ensure you pick out a mattress that is your preferred size and firmness. Then, decide how your mattress should be supported, such as a box spring or a bunk board. You might have read that last sentence and be wondering, what is a bunk board? A bunk board is an alternative to a box spring for smaller spaces. If you have a smaller room and want your bed to take up less space, this is the support fixture you should consider.

While your bed is important from a functional standpoint, it also ties into the decoration of the room as well. Pick bed sheets and a blanket that complement the colors of the walls and floors for a cohesive look.

2. Choosing the Right Colors

Colors help bring the whole room together. There is more to color than just choosing your favorites, however. Using color can be done in a thoughtful way that unites in a subtle manner. Since you will be sleeping in your bedroom, consider going with a muted, relaxing color scheme rather than an overtly bright and bold palette. The colors you pick should be appropriate for a relaxing environment.

3. Incorporating Lighting

Lighting is a big part of decoration. Letting the natural sunlight from the windows into your room helps bring out colors. For non-natural light, soft lighting is important for a relaxing room. The bulbs you use for your lamps or overhead lights should not be excessively bright and should be soft enough for creating a calming atmosphere. The light fixtures themselves can be used to complement the color and shape of your room as well.

4. Using Mirrors as a Decoration

Using mirrors above nightstands and dressers adds both form and function to your room. If you have a smaller room, the mirror creates a feeling of depth and the illusion that the room is larger and more open. Try this out if you want to add a good sense of style to the room.

5. Choosing Wall Art

Plain, undecorated walls make for a dull appearance. Add paintings, posters, or other kinds of art to your walls to bring the room to life and add personality to your bedroom.

6. Choosing the Best Furniture

Furniture is important not just for the function they serve, but also with how they look. Find the right fixtures that suit your needs and complement the color, shape, and other fixtures of the bedroom. Keep the furniture spread out to provide you enough space to move around the room as well.

7. Using Shelves

Shelves serve their purpose of storing your books and other items. However, adding some decorations such as art pieces and figures gives your room added flavor.

8. Having Everything Match

Think about the grand scheme of how you want your bedroom to look. Either pick out a theme or a color scheme and stick with it, so that every item in the room feels like part of a cohesive whole.

Decorating your bedrooms can be a daunting task. However, once you get a grand picture of how you want the room to look, piecing everything together is a fun and rewarding activity. Have fun assembling your perfect bedroom.
