There are too many people calling themselves photographers - owning a camera does not make you one! It is relatively easy to publish your work on the Internet, blogs, in online magazines or even social platforms. Nevertheless one must remember that it is not quantity but quality of the published photos that can lead to the desired profitable/artistic career. It is also good to get a second opinion of your photographic choices. But whom shall we ask? The days of having to rely on our families and friends, with all due respect, are over. Surprisingly, every photography aficionado has a chance to have his/her works reviewed by one of the best industry professionals there are: Vogue Italia editorial staff.
In April 2010 Vogue Italia launched PhotoVogue. It is an online platform created with the idea of giving creative people a place they could showcase their photographic work. By uploading your work you automatically create an online portfolio with your name (as seen in photo 1). Each day the Vogue editorial staff assess each photograph sent. From among the photos uploaded, the ones thought most interesting are chosen for inclusion in the author portfolio. From among the shots published, the ones thought outstanding are chosen and shown on a daily basis on PhotoVogue’s home page in the Photo of the day section (as seen in photo 2). The selection is made on both technical and more “emotional” criteria. Then the photo is assessed in terms of composition, crop, subject, originality, lighting, colour and ideas.
After the great success of the project and over 20,000 photographers on the PhotoVogue pages, Vogue Italia expanded PhotoVogue in collaboration with Art + Commerce, the photo agency which represents many of today's most successful photographers, including renowned Vogue contributors Steven Meisel, Craig McDean, Sølve Sundsbø, Tim Walker, Paolo Roversi and Ellen von Unwerth.
With this new venture, Vogue Italia and Art + Commerce are partnering to provide PhotoVogue contributing photographers the opportunity to be represented for licensing and syndication. This merge is a rights-managed image library comprised of the pictures selected by Vogue's editorial staff. Each picture will be available to be purchased for editorial use and the agency provides photographers with access to the most respected print and digital publications around the world, licensing images to illustrate editorial features, magazine and book covers, and online stories. This way the PhotoVogue contributors gain this unparalleled opportunity to increase their visibility and profit from their work.
