Long Islands’ Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum of Art

Celebrated Competition Breaks Records with Island-Wide Participation

March 11 to April 9, 2017

Huntington, NY -- Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum of Art, the most prestigious juried competition for high school art students from Suffolk and Nassau Counties,    will be on view from March 11 to April 9, 2017. A record number of student entries --387 --representing 56 schools across Long Island were submitted.   Jurors took on the difficult challenge of selecting 84 works for the professionally mounted exhibit in the Museum galleries.

Now in its 21st year, Long Island’s Best is a hallmark of The Heckscher Museum’s education programs. This juried exhibition is the only one of its kind on Long Island that provides students the unparalleled opportunity to exhibit their artwork in a prominent museum and to be featured in the full-color catalog that accompanies the exhibit.  Museum visitors are treated to exceptional artwork by talented emerging artists.

For the first time, visitors will have a chance to see more than 200 pieces of the artwork submitted through a digital display in the Museum that will run for the entirety of the exhibit.  In addition, Mitchells, the venerable Huntington-based department store, will feature select images from Long Island’s Best in their front windows, from April 12 through May 9, 2017.

“The overall educational experience, professional jury, expertly mounted exhibit of student work, and the full-color catalog that accompanies the exhibit speaks to the Heckscher Museum’s commitment to nurturing young talent. Long Island’s Best solidifies the Museum’s place as a center of art for the next generation,” noted Michael Schantz, Executive Director.

The program begins with students visiting the Museum during the school year and choosing a work of art as a point of inspiration. Students submit their art along with a detailed artist statement. “The caliber of work is more remarkable every year,” noted Joy Weiner,

Director of Education. “And each year the artist statements become more creative and thoughtful, showing how students are using their communication skills as well as their creativity.”

Jurors for the exhibition are Lisa Chalif, Curator, Heckscher Museum of Art, and guest juror Cindy Grimm, Education Manager, Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum & Education Center.

Generous support for Long Island’s Best is provided by Robin T. Hadley, Presenting Sponsor; TD Charitable Foundation, Patron Sponsor; The Claire Friedlander Family Foundation, Patron Sponsor; Inna Gellerman, DDS, Gellerman Orthodontics; and RBC Wealth Management
