Claude Monet's IMPRESSION – SUNRISE (1867)
is widely recognized as the beginning of Modernism and what we now call modern art-a movement that lasted until about 1975.
Modernism sought to break free from representational work and move towards more experimental styles, such as Cubism, Impressionism, and Abstract Expressionism.
Art created after 1975 is referred to as Contemporary, or Postmodern Art.
