Bill Murray and Sofia Coppola are bringing a little extra festive magic to our screens this Christmas.
The new trailer for their highly anticipated Netflix special A Very Murray Christmas has dropped online and shows a whole host of A-list stars joining the Ghostbusters actor for some yuletide fun:
However this isn't any ordinary holiday special, indeed the show will be a mix of traditional sing-a-long celebrations along with some Larry Sanders-style backstage comedy drama.
The story centres on Oscar nominee Murray who is worried that none of us showbiz guests will be able to make his Christmas show due to a snow storm.
And Murray, who is playing himself, clearly has high expectations for the event, saying in the teaser: “Tonight will go down as the greatest night in history.”
The rest of the cast is phenomenal including George Clooney, Michael Cera, Amy Poehler, Paul Shaffer, Jason Schwartzman, Chris Rock and Miley Cyrus.
Pop star Cryus, who can be heard singing classic 'Let It Snow' with the titular comedic star in the trailer, was recently praised by Murray at Comic-Con.
He said (via Variety): “I'm gonna say this officially: Miley Cyrus …is good. I was not particularly convinced (before the show). Miley Cyrus is really f***in’ good. She can really sing.
“I just thought she was a knucklehead crazy girl, the kind of girl you want to go on a road trip with who didn't have ID or something, but she can really sing.
“So I don't want to hear any more bad rapping on Miley Cyrus, OK?.”
Of course, Murray has worked with director Coppola before on the heartfelt and funny Lost in Translation (2003). In fact for such an inexperienced filmmaker at the time, Coppola managed to utilise the former SNL comic's talents, arguably better than anyone.
This promises to be a rare treat – let's hope it heralds a new era of brilliant holiday specials.
A Very Murray Christmas lands on Netflix on December 4th – here is a synopsis:
This winter, Bill Murray brings an extra-special dose of holiday cheer to Netflix with the premiere of an all-star musically-driven holiday special, A Very Murray Christmas. Set inside New York City’s iconic Carlyle hotel, A Very Murray Christmas opens with Murray preparing to host a live, international holiday broadcast. After a blizzard shuts down the production, he makes the best of the situation by singing and celebrating with friends, hotel employees and anyone else who drops by. Through luck and perseverance, guests arrive at the Carlyle hotel to help him; dancing and singing in holiday spirit.
