Pitch Perfect 3 Gets Pacific Rim 2 Release Date as Guillermo del Toro Moves on to Small Indie Film

Recently, Legendary Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros. have gotten mixed up into a bit of a messy situation with Legendary moving Kong: Skull Island to Warner Bros., despite having a five-year deal with Universal. According to insiders, Universal isn’t very happy with Legendary’s chief Thomas Tull at the moment.
This all may explain why Universal put Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom on indefinite hold, leaving director Guillermo del Toro’s follow up, well, in the middle of the maelstrom. The film’s release date of August 4, 2017 has been given to Pitch Perfect 3 whose originally date of July 21 would have pit the a cappella film against Christopher Nolan’s next movie, and Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
While Pacific Rim 2 is on indefinite hold, it hasn’t been cancelled outright. In a statement from Universal and Legendary, del Toro and the creative team will use this time, “to continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film,” so that it can deliver “the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves.” That sounds suspiciously like code for “this film is too expensive. We’re getting them to do rewrites to make it cheaper.”
Meanwhile, the director hasn’t given up hope on the film and gave an update:
As far as I’m concerned, it’s not cancelled, just postponed. Right now, we have to put a budget and screenplay together, present it to Universal and Legendary, and they will make a decision.
Not one to rest on his laurels, del Toro is planning to direct a independently financed movie, whose plot he is keeping under wraps as his next film. According to The Tracking Board a few weeks ago, he made a deal with Fox Searchlight to direct an original story that was described as Wall-E meets Splash so this could be his next film. We're not sure if this is the mysterious black and white film he discussed in 2014.
Del Toro’s next release will be Crimson Peak, due in theaters on October 16, 2015.
