The Crow Remake May Lose Director Following Bankruptcy Setback

The remake of The Crow might be the unluckiest project in the history of Hollywood.

After losing a plethora of stars and directors, the movie hit an almighty stumbling block when production company Relativity Media filed for bankruptcy.

However, it has now been revealed, thanks to the bankruptcy filings, that helmer Colin Hardy may be on the verge of leaving the beleaguered picture.

The film is another adaptation of James O'Barr's comic book, which was originally adapted back in 1994 with the late Brandon Lee in the lead – the star was infamously killed during filming.

According to TheWrap, Relativity has listed The Crow as one of its assets in the filing – however producer Edward Pressman has objected to this and wants to regain control of the film's rights. 

The rights to the picture will revert back to Pressman, who produced the Lee movie, in 18 months if Relativity do not follow through with their contractual obligation and make the feature.

But despite the company investing $7 million so far, Pressman contends that they do not have enough cash to distribute and promote the film properly.

In the filings, Pressman states that it would cost between $10 million and $12 million to release the remake on “no less than 1000 screens.”

Interestingly, the producer also states that the project is “in danger of losing the services of the director of the picture … who is widely regarded as a key creative element. Thus, the production of the picture is imploding even as the time to make the picture is running out under The Crow contract.”

Director Hardy (The Hallow) took over the reigns of the troubled flick from F. Javier Gutiérrez in early 2014. Since then, he has seen a raft big name stars come and go, including Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), who deserted the project just before production was due to start this summer, right before the bankruptcy.

Luke Evans, Bradley Cooper and Tom Hiddleston were all previously attached to play the lead before leaving citing scheduling issues – or in Evans' case, frustration with the lack of progress.
