Screen heavyweight Joaquin Phoenix thinks blockbuster movies neglect character development in favour of action set pieces.
The Master actor was reportedly in talks with Marvel about playing Doctor Strange before Benedict Cumberbatch took the role. Speaking with Time Out London, the Oscar nominee revealed why he continually turns down the chance to star in effects driven movies.
He said: "When I was younger I was probably a bit of a snob about (it). But they’ve gotten better. I’ve flirted with several of those films, having meetings and getting close, but ultimately it never felt like they’d really be fulfilling."
He continued: "There were too many requirements that went against my instincts for character. I’ve been spoiled. I’ve never had to make those compromises. I’ve not met a director yet with one of those films where we go through the script, they say: 'You know what, f--k this set-piece, let’s focus on the character!' I understand, but it’s best I don’t do it."
Of course, while interesting, Phoenix's stance doesn't come as a huge surprise.
The biggest movie the star has appeared in was Gladiator, which despite having a budget of $103 million, featured hugely complex lead characters and had an iconic director in the form of Ridley Scott.
And considering most actors don't sign on for CGI-laden blockbusters because of the writing or character development, but rather the pay check – Phoenix's resistance to 'selling out' must be admired.
But the 40-year-old actor did reveal he does enjoy some blockbuster films.
He said: “I enjoy watching those movies. Did you see the rebooted ‘Star Trek’? That kid Chris Pine who plays Kirk is fucking genius.
“I just don’t know if I want to have the experience of being in them. I’ve read some of those scripts and 75 percent is a description of some asteroid going through space.”
Phoenix's latest movie is Woody Allen's new comedy Irrational Man.
